Thank goodness you can’t buy single items at trade fairs – it would have made our trip to Top Drawer an expensive day out! Top Drawer is the world's only curated design-led trade show, held twice a year in Olympia London. This week, we visited the Autumn/Winter 2018 event.
The fair is a one-stop shop for retailers to browse thousands of leading and undiscovered UK and international brands. All are chosen for their beautiful design, exceptional quality, originality and commercial appeal. And it’s huge. This year over 15,000 visitors browsed over 1,500 brands, while 59,500 people followed proceedings online.
Here are our favourites from this year’s show. We already stock the top five brands, so they’re easy to shop immediately.
Rachel Jackson London
Rachel was looking fabulous in her gold Goddess Earrings and pieces from her new collection as she gave us the lowdown on what’s what for 2019 – surprisingly lightweight Art Deco inspired nova star detail rings and bangles, and drop earrings featuring Rachel's trademark Art Deco inspired alphabet charms.
A Weathered Penny
We got a sneak preview of Kayleigh’s designs for the new 2018/2019 season. Expect to swoon over her new Fine range as well as a fresh Face Collection. Our favourite earrings and pendants were crafted in 18k gold plate and feature a cut out face design. Coming to Arlette Gold soon!
Firm favourites and Peckham neighbours Just Trade have launched their second collaboration with award winning author and illustrator Coralie Bickford-Smith. The collection of pendants and earrings is inspired by Coralie’s The Worm and the Bird and features her fern, bee, dragonfly and crystal illustrations. Each piece is handmade by Lizet and Diana from the Hope jewellery fair trade project in Lima, Peru. A stand-out design was inspired by ferns. The botanical motif has also been screen-printed in gold pigment on cotton and artisans in Vietnam have used the fabric to produce luxurious but affordable coin purses, pencil cases, cosmetic cases and our favourite - a jewellery roll case. It’s the first jewellery roll we’ve ever wanted to own!
We caught up with designer Vicky in the craft section, launching her Muscle Memory SS19 collection. She’s now producing pieces combining her trademark organic Jesmonite in bright green with traces of metal. By popular request she has also started to produce cufflinks – perhaps you’ll see them popping up on Arlette Gold soon.
Studio mate of Vicky’s, Emma Aitchison showcased new pieces crafted from recycled silver, brass and gold plate. Emma draws inspiration from nature with a specific interest in climate change. Sustainability is at her core; she crafts in recycled and fairtrade materials. She gave us some pointers on sourcing packaging – we’d love to know your thoughts on us using sustainable products. We also heard about her new houseboat adventure which finds her docking somewhere different every two weeks!
The two women behind this quirky kids’ label introduced us to their exciting new packaging – their rings now come in small acrylic gift pots. They’ve also got an array of new pretty necklaces. So expect to much more sparkly delicate jewellery from this clever duo at Arlette Gold.
Seen Around Top Drawer...
Founded in 2009 on London’s iconic Portobello Road Market, Ottomanhands make glamourous, 21ct gold-plated brass pieces set by hand with semi-precious stones. We are coveting their Disco and Bauhaus collections.
We’ve been watching these creative, sincere designers for a while. The pair were launching their new Times Gone By collection. We fell hard for the The Edith, Ellen, Ella and Esther pieces which are inspired by vintage jewellery.
