National Fitness Day 2018

September 26th is National Fitness Day 2018 – what better excuse to try out a new form of exercise? We’ve rounded up some of the most fun events in London. 

Dance With Darcey

Celebrate the fun of fitness alongside athletes such as Alex Danson and Colin Jackson with a #nationalfitnessday community workout held in the iconic Guildhall Courtyard. Wake up and work out with Dame Darcey Bussell at 7.30am, then set yourself up for the day with a 40 minute yoga session. Try out a Les Mills body combat class at 12.30pm or a Sh’bam dance class at 1pm. Free. More details here

Fit for Free 

To celebrate the day, many local leisure centres and gyms are offering a range of free taster sessions and gym passes. Grab a free pass for DW Fitness Clubs and check out their state of the art technology and innovative classes. Use the activity finder here to discover what’s happening near you. 

Top of the Pops 

Fancy trying a new class that promises to get you fit, strong and happy? POPfit. Developed by Royal Ballet-trained dancer Stephanie Burrows, these sessions offer high-intensity, movement-based workouts to loud pop music. It’s all about working out with a smile, using cardio, strengthening and stretching movements. Go pop here 

Pilates Ahoy! 

If you take things a little more seriously, build your bendiness and power at one of the many great Pilates studios in London. Time Out list their pick of the best. From studio to mat classes, dynamic to classical – there are classes for all levels and preferences. 

Chain Gang

Fans of pedal power won’t miss out on the special day; zing up your ride with a hit of caffeine at Boxpark, Shoreditch. On September 25–26, De’Longhi are opening their pop up Cycle-Thru Coffee Shop, where you can snag freshly ground espresso coffee at the touch of a button. You won’t even have to dismount. If you’re lucky, you may be served by Olympian Sir Chris Hoy. He claims that coffee has helped him stay on track to medal success. Many experts believe that coffee acts as a stimulus for both mind and muscles before exercise. More here.

Going Pear-Shaped

Perhaps you’re not so keen on exercise, but crave a healthy diet. You’re in luck – London’s on a power-food kick. Avocados have long been the junior hipster’s snack of choice, and are regarded as a superfood. The green fruits are taking centre stage on the menu of a new restaurant. Avobar opened in the Summer on Covent Garden’s Henrietta Street, and serves such delights as Avo Bun Burgers, Green Shakshuka and Avo with Coconut Labneh.  Alternatively, now is a great time to jump on the vegan wagon. Time Out are offering a “Table for Two” gift card giving you 50% off at nine of the best vegan friendly restaurants in London.
