Top Drawer, the fashion and home trade show returned to Olympia this week, showcasing more than 1000 design-led brands. It gives buyers and retailers unique access to exciting new designers, brand-new products, and a glimpse into looks that will be hitting our streets over the next year. We come away wanting everything there and picked out some fantastic pieces that will be hitting Arlette Gold very soon. We can’t wait for you to see them. The show was buzzing – we’re incredibly excited about what’s happening in accessories right now, the sector is more colourful and boundary-pushing than ever; setting trends for the rest of the fashion industry to follow.
We’d love to share our top five discoveries from this year’s show.
Fernanda Sibilia and her team of 10 artisans are based in Buenos Aires and make the most beautiful bold colourful jewellery heavily influenced by the designer’s passion for Latin American art. Her bold colour combinations; aquamarine blues and coral sunset shades sing alongside unexpected materials; oxidised brass, copper, and alpaca silver alloy. We are a little in love with her Good Fortune Earrings with their juicy rainbow colours and fascinating textures.
FL Private Collection
You could lose yourself for days in the colour of Fotini Liama’s gold-plated bronze pieces. The Greek designer’s statement pieces are crafted into flowing, organic shapes inspired by the ocean and the country’s gorgeous light. Crafted in artisan fashion, each piece is hand-made and unique – each as light as one of Icarus’ feathers. We love the hoops and rings with pearl details.
We first noticed the animal-shaped jewellery of And Mary in the V&A shop, and were delighted to explore their whole collection at Top Drawer. The husband and wife team, Neil and Alison create their whimsical, hand-painted porcelain designs at their home in the Scottish borders. Their display resembled a dainty Noah’s Ark, with every animal you could think of in necklace and earring form; we fell hard for the slumbering sloth collection. Dog lovers will adore their pooch-shaped pieces – find every breed you can think of, or look for more fairytale designs; polar bears, unicorns, or little mice perched on mushrooms. Utterly adorable.
Each D of these Canadian-made pieces are handmade from architectural materials. They contain a minimum of 40% pre-consumer recycled material; waste from producers of sky lights, store fixtures and vending machine covers. organics and textiles is sourced from artisan communities in developing countries around the world. Concrete, Corian, eco resin, Jesomonite are transformed into statement pieces; huge multi-hued concrete jesmonite earrings, colourful corona necklaces that contrast textured stone with metals, and brightly coloured eco resin cuffs that burst with colour. We love their story and the materials – this feels like the future.
Dainty and delicate, Lucy’s hand-made, sterling silver pieces are charmingly understated. We love this Cornish designer’s minimal silver studs that suit even the tiniest of earlobes and come in the cutest styles; stars, geometric shapes, flowers and shells, with hammered textures that bring them to life. Sterling silver is gentle on the skin, so these are just perfect for those with multiple piercings or recently pierced children.
And it was great to catch up with our current designers…
A Weathered Penny
We are really excited about Kayleigh’s designs for 2019. There’s a parade of new pieces (also named after girls) coming to join the party alongside the firm favourites of AW18 (Chloe, Audrey, Ava and Mia). The new collection has hints of seaside living, coming in shades of blush, fern, oat, rose, cedar, linen and sand, paired with shell-like textures. Think bleached-out driftwood, sun-baked dunes and sparkling seas. Ah, summer… Coming to Arlette Gold soon!
Just Trade launched their Rachel Collection, which combines bold shards of dark blue Tagua with geometric brass in irregular earrings and statement necklaces and hoops in a multitude of sizes. All fair trade and ethical, of course! Watch this space! Coming to Arlette Gold soon!
Kelly Weinberger, founder of Worldfinds hopped across from Chicago to exhibit at Top Drawer for the first time, although, somewhat exhaustingly, this is their third trade show of 2019! It was worth the trip! We pored over their bigger, bolder versions of their classic Kantha Hoop, new riffs on their layered necklaces and beaded cuffs in more eye-popping colours than ever, and lots of pieces in recycled textiles and brass, all fair-trade and made in India. These are perfect for the SS19 maximalist trend; stock up ahead of the pack!
We were delighted to catch up with Laviandbell’s Simona and Steffanie again. They continue to push boundaries with their fun packaging – their sweet enamel necklaces now come in a colourful candy wrapper pot. We’re excited about their new, delicate bee studs – everyone loves a bee – in gold and silver. And expect more neon and rainbow-coloured stones plus pretty gold and silver dot necklaces. We are awaiting stock!
