Travelling with jewellery

Do you ever arrive on holiday to find your favourite earrings swimming all over your suitcase; the bangle you put in a side pocket for safe keeping now hopelessly lost; and a tangled mess of necklaces in your favourite make up bag? You’re desperate to head out for your first cocktail, but first you have to sort out this mess. What a tedious nightmare!

Keen to take those pieces that make you happy but wondering how to pack them successfully? There are hundreds of great cosmetic pouches out there but travel jewellery storage is a bit different. You’ll need something with separate sections, lined with something soft to protect from scratches and keep your pieces clean and shiny. The best have a strong, durable material on the outside to protect your jewellery. A good travel storage solution is worth investing in – here are our favourites.

Wildthings Collectables founder Leanne Jacomett knows all about travel. She designs in her Amsterdam studio and travels to Bali where her jewellery is made by a family of handsilversmiths. Leanne even opened her flagship store on the island. So it's only natural that Leanne has designed her own Jewellery Organiser - made in a soft suede and available in a variety of colours. There is a band for rings, eyelets for earrings, an area to keep necklaces separated and a pocket for bracelets.

This Mini Travel Jewellery Roll from Caroline Gardner comes in shiny silver, which makes it easy to find in your suitcase. A durable, faux-leather outside houses a soft, faux-suede inner, which is organised into a zip pocket and places for rings and earrings. The securing ribbon means this roll is really versatile – tie tight for weekends away or leave loose for longer trips.

Estella Bartlett’s Happy Thoughts Mini Jewellery Box mini jewellery box is a bigger option, perfect for a jewellery addict who can’t decide what to take away. It has a compartment for earrings, an elasticated pocket for chains and third for rings. We love its happy, vibrant yellow colour.

Get playful with Missoma’s Starry Eyed Trinket Travel Box. Made from vegan leather, it’s sturdy and durable but soft, and has three inner compartments to keep your pieces separate. Very cool.

We love this rectangular Long Raffia Jewellery Box from Oliver Bonas. Its embroidered raffia exterior features blue and yellow stars and a pink pom pom; while inside it’s seriously summery in brightly striped soft fabric with three separate compartments. I’d be tempted to carry it on separately as hand luggage, it’s so cheery!

If you want something seriously glamorous, Sophie Bille Brahe’s Velvet Jewellery Box comes in jewel-like hues and has a luscious satin interior complete with slip pocket. Decadent and lovely.

You don’t need to splash out on specialist jewellery storage – our travel hacks will keep your pieces safe and sound wherever they roam.

Use a drinking straw to keep your necklaces from tangling – thread one side of the chain through the straw and attach at the other end. Do the same with toilet rolls for bracelets.

Use a seven-day pill box for studs and other small pieces – they’re available at most local chemists! You could even be super efficient and organise your jewellery by day.

Line mint tins with cotton wool to carry precious pieces.

Thread ear posts through buttons, business cards or wine corks.

Use old-fashioned sandwich bags!
