Founded in London in 2009 by Simona Brunozzi Moro and Steffanie Brown, Laviandbelle handcraft unique and quirky jewellery for both children and adults.
Simona Brunozzi Moro and Steffanie Brown met when their sons were in the same class at school and hit it off immediately. Both were expats living in London – Simona was born and grew up in Rome; Steffanie grew up in Toronto, and spent time in the US before settling in England. Each woman had started their careers as lawyers but had left wanting something more creative; Simona set up a business selling children’s clothing and then worked in interior design, while Steffanie was a book editor. They met at a point when they both wanted, and needed, a more flexible work/life balance.
Exasperated with the low-quality, mass-market offerings on the high street, they saw a gap in the children’s jewellery market and, as Steffanie says, “were sure that we could make something better”. They aimed to “create pieces that look and feel high-end without an eye-watering price tag” for children and teenagers.
Laviandbelle was born, named after their daughters, Lavinia and Isabel. At first they gave their designs for birthday and Christmas presents, to an overwhelming response from both children and mums. The brand is now sold across Europe, Australia and the Middle East, and has expanded to include a line for women.
As mums to teenage daughters they know what’s on trend, so the brand is always relevant.
Laviandbelle create simple, elegant yet funky, and easy-to-wear designs for children, using high quality materials. They are reasonably priced and offer flexible sizing. Each handmade piece is different, making these designs perfect for a gift. This season’s treats include chunky huggie hoops studded with sparkling cubic zirconia and rainbow gems, spiky ear cuffs and delicate ballchain necklaces, strung with outlines of hearts. The duo’s trademark quirky studs include tiny gold and silver bees, jagged lightning bolts and the ever-popular LOL/OMG pair of earrings.
The Italian-Canadian duo work out of a studio in Notting Hill. They both source, design and handcraft; Simona looks after the accounts, Steffanie manages the website and writes for the press.
They travel across Europe and North America to source their carefully chosen materials – antique charms, semi-precious stones and textiles – and this hands-on process has been a challenging-yet-exciting learning curve.
