London designer Alice Blofeld is the talent behind Shyla. Her designs are elevated, highly ethical, and their quality makes them the epitome of ‘buy me once’ shopping. Alice has an eye for a classic line yet always finds a modern twist, which gives her jewellery both longevity and originality. She says, “I want to create pieces that aren't necessarily trend-led, but rather pieces that you will be able to wear five years from now and still be relevant and chic.’
We adore Alice’s contrasting textures; she pairs traditional-feeling tiny pearls with modern, high-shine gold shapes such as the huggie. Her signature ridged hydro glass pieces are reminiscent of antique scent bottles; pure fin-de-siècle glamour with art deco lines flowing like leaves or ferns, but their gold fixings add a sharply modern polish.
The brand is named after a woman that Alice met in India. She says that the original Shyla, “Was a true inspiration. She had set up a charity that empowers and educates some of India's poorest women, most of whom had been badly abused. She never turned a woman in need away. I remember meeting her at the young age of 21 and being in awe of such a person. I never forgot her name, Shyla. Today we give a percentage of our profit to her charity.”
Ethics are as important as design at Shyla. Alice says, “We are morally motivated. We have two small workshops in India which I visit twice yearly. I work very closely with the silversmiths there and together we’re growing our respective small family businesses. One of the owners of the small workshops can now afford to send his children to university, which is fantastic! All our stones are ethically sourced, and I oversee this myself when I go to India. 60% of our gold and silver is recycled, and all our packaging is recycled.”
We’re excited to be stocking Shlya. Alice’s designs feel like the kind of treasures you might uncover rummaging through your most stylish aunt’s jewellery box. She says, “I was inspired originally by my mum's vintage earrings and also saw a gap in the market for high-quality jewellery that doesn’t cost the earth.” Enjoy uncovering her timeless treasures.
